Leadership and the IEEE CS LeaD Chapter

Dear students,

Creation of the IEEE Computer Society Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Professional Development (LEAD) Chapter at UTEP was initially funded by the Kauffman Foundation under the Kauffman Campus Initiative. During the first year of operation, the IEEE CS LeaD chapter officers organized talks and hands-on activities to develop entrepreneurial, leadership, professional, and business skills of participants. This year we plan to grow the chapter and provide additional hands-on activities to benefit chapter members.

We invite you to join us this Thursday, June 16th, at noon for a presentation on Leadership by Rick O’Brien from the College of Engineering.

Fully funded PhD studentship in Search Based Testing Financial Computing Systems at UCL

A fully funded PhD studentship is offered in Search Based Testing Financial Computing Systems. The studentship is supported by a partnership between UCL’s Doctoral Training Centre in Financial Computing, led by Professor Philip Treleaven and its Software Systems Engineering group, led by Professor Mark Harman.

About the studentship project: Financial computing systems lie at the very heart of the digital economy on which we all depend. These systems involve complex, rapid, distributed computation that provides both decision support and decision making capabilities with far reaching consequences. From the banking crisis of 2008 to the stock market flash crash of May 2010 (which caused the largest ever single-day fall in the Dow Jones Index) we see the potential pernicious effects of the software systems that govern financial transactions. Testing these systems remains a concern of paramount importance. This studentship will focus on techniques associated with Search Based Software Testing, exploring ways in which these techniques can be used to explore and probe the space of risk, stress and exceptional behaviour in financial systems.

About Financial Computing at UCL: UCL is Europe’s leading university for Financial Computing research and teaching, collaborating closely with the financial services sector to provide outstanding graduates for careers in finance and to provide internationally-leading research to address important sector challenges. We engage at national and supranational levels to help identify key business and regulatory challenges, and we assist national bodies in providing input to public policy on financial services research and development. We have industry links with hundreds of companies spanning the whole of financial services, including investment banks, retail banks, hedge funds, insurance companies, reinsurance companies, stock exchanges, alternative execution venues and financial services technology firms. Financial Computing comprises both Computational Finance (algorithmic trading, risk management, market simulation and portfolio optimisation) and Financial IT (financial software engineering, cloud computing, GPU and scalable high-performance computing).

About Software Engineering at UCL: UCL’s Software Systems Engineering group (SSE) is one of the best in the world. Its work spans the range of software development activities from Requirements and Planning, through Large Scale Distributed and Mobile Systems to Testing, Maintenance and Evolution. The group takes a fundamentally empirical and experimental approach to the analysis, design, testing and improvement of software systems. The group is widely regarded as both a founder and leader of the field of Search Based Software Engineering, the topic for which this studentship is sought. The group’s funding comes from the EPSRC, EU, Industry, Government and Charities. The EPSRC, the UK’s research council has awarded the group both programme and platform grants; its two most prestigious awards. The group’s work has a high profile both within the research and practitioner communities that it serves. UCL-SSE’s programme committee memberships include many of those that will be fami!
liar to the academic research community as the highest prestige such as FSE, ICSE, ICST, ISSTA, MODELS and RE. Its faculty regularly give keynote talks and provide consultancy to industry and governments. The group’s work is used by Daimler, Ericsson, Google, IBM, Microsoft and Motorola, all of which have published the results of their work with UCL-SSE.
